The Copper Pig Bbq & Social House

Last night was my second visit to our city’s newest downtown restaurant, the Copper Pig BBQ & Social House. While the whole BBQ experience is a standard subculture for our American neighbours, it finally making a more dominant mark in Canada’s cuisine … and I love it!

I’m very proud of the wonderful plethora of locally owned, delicious restaurants that are becoming dominant in Prince George’s downtown core. I’m not a fan of the franchise chains and look forward to original creations you can only taste in this part of the city. The Copper Pig is an excellent addition to what’s already happening down there.

With little to no advertising, the Copper Pig has been steadily packed. We tried making a reservation last weekend, but they were booked solid. While we were disappointed that we wouldn’t be indulging in that mouth watering BBQ, I was happy that they were doing so well. So when it came to booking this weekend’s reservation, I called 2 days prior, just to make sure we got a seat. I’m glad we did because the place was packed from wall to wall by 6PM.

You can get all sorts of BBQ at the Copper Pig, they have decadent ribs that are so juicy on the inside, yet has a great crisp on the outside … The beef brisket is second to none … and the pulled pork literally melts in your mouth! More of a chicken person? They’ve got that too and it doesn’t disappoint. And did I mention they have 3 different types of BBQ sauces that you can slather your meats with? Choose from hot, sweet or smokey! While this place sounds like a vegetarians worst nightmare, have no fear, as they also have a couple of amazing looking veggie friendly dishes as well.

It’s evident that this restaurant knows that a great BBQ dish isn’t complete without some famous sides. Be sure to try their house potato salad, green beans and corn bread. They also have wonderful fresh and crispy Shasta chips that come with a zingy mayo sauce for dipping.

So yeah, that’s a lot of food covered for only visiting their establishment twice! But last night, my boyfriend and I shared their $45 Frost Bites Dinner for 2, which is an amazing deal! You get a starter appy of their frost bites dip, which is warm cream cheese with roasted vegetables and herbs, served with bread and veggies. The dinner is their George Street BBQ Share Platter, which comes with a serving of BBQ pork ribs, beef briskets, smoked pulled pork, BBQ chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, shasta chips and corn bread! It was a huge meal that was worth every penny, plus it’s a great way to get acquainted with what’s on their menu!

If you’re not into eating and you just want to hang out with friends, they also have a wicked drink menu! They go above and beyond what normal restaurant bars serve. Check out their amazing creations, like the spicy BBQ cesar, found on their fusion list, or try one of their many different types of beers. My ultimate favourite part about the drink menu, is they have an entire section devoted to sour drinks! Be still, my beating heart! Try their TCP House Sour … it’s fresh lemon and lime, mixed with whiskey and fresh mint … and don’t forget about the equally tasty Cherry Raspberry Sour … it has huge pieces of liquor drunk fruit in it! If you’re looking for a bevy to warm up a cold winter night, they have an entire section of warm liquor drinks that pay homage to the other great downtown eateries named after Nancy O’s, The Hummus Brothers and more. Talk about supporting local business!

I also understand that the Copper Pig has an all you can eat BBQ lunch on Fridays from noon until 1pm for $16, (sign me up) where you can grab a seat at their 14′ Social Table and chow down while making new friends. I have also yet to try their $2.50 tastings sessions that happen Monday to Friday from 4:30 – 5:30, but will hopefully soon be all over that!

If you’re looking for something different on your next night out, I highly recommend the Copper Pig BBQ and Social House. You’ll want to go back, and you’ll pretty much keep thinking about them until you do!
